STU’S COOL SHIT

BuildingNewsRoofingTools

Stu Hampton is a familiar face around the Fribesco Nelson HQ. He’s one half of the teaching team at the Roofing and Cladding Academy, and with decades of experience roofing in both New Zealand and Australia, Stu knows a thing or two about cool tools. His honest insights into roofing products are always appreciated in our workshop. We’ve asked him to share a couple of his current ‘cool shit’ tools.

Masc Standing Seam Clamps

A simple and effective way to create scallops that replaces using hand-made sheet metal templates that tend to go walkabout. This robust little tool from MASC is great for marking scallops and 45° double and angled seams. Coming in at 650g, it’s small but mighty and complete with a locking mechanism to stop slippage. It can also be used as an anvil to stretch material on stop ends. The perfect pairing for the clamps is the Stubai Curved Tin Snips. These durable snips are great for scallops and tight radius work.

Falz Cutter

A tool so nice, Martin barely allowed us to turn it on. And a bit different, as it’s used for dismantling standing seam roofing rather than making it. It’s compatible with most drills and designed for use on double-lock standing seam roofs. It’s a cool piece of kit. But why do we have it? Well, everything has a lifespan and replacements and repairs need to be made in the life of any roof. This tool makes dismantling a standing seam a breeze.

Bonus cool tool

It often happens whilst filming videos with Stu that Martin introduces a new tool. The Malco A50 Scriber is one such tool. It’s sharp, durable, and pocket-ready — making perfect lines on hardened steel, glass, ceramics, plastics, and sheet metal.
